First of all, thanks to Amanda for hosting this awesome link-up where we can let out minds run ransom 😉
Now into the post…
I’ve heard these very words countless times after recounting the various foods I can’t eat for medical reasons: “Oh my gosh, I could never do that! Oh my gosh WHAT DO THE HECK DO YOU EAT?!?”
Well ‘imma bout to show you…
First of all, I eat bread. I eat a lot of bread. I love carbs. Carbs are life.
Sure, it’s taken some trial and error, but there IS good gluten free bread.
This Canyon Bakehouse Cinnamon Raisin bread is the BEST gluten free bread I’ve tried thus far. Gluten free or not, you need to get yourself some Canyon Bakehouse bread! Any also try broiled banana coins- GAME-CHANGER!
Side note: This was the kombucha I snuck into Finding Dory #rebellife, am I right ;)?
I also have been loving kombucha lately. I’ve never been a soda person since my mom never kept it in the house and whenever we went to a party or something, my mom would let me and my siblings have soda OR a dessert. I don’t know about you, but I am not about to waste my dessert on some sugary fizzy drink when I could have a piece of cake. No thank you. That all being said, if you are into soda, I highly recommend you try kombucha. Not only is it not full of added sugar, but it also packs probiotic benefits. I’ve only really tried this GTS Synergy Trilogy one since that’s what my Trader Joe’s started carrying, but I can’t wait to try more!
Another addiction of mine: Square Bars: OH MY GOODNESS!!! I swear these were sent down from heaven. Some stats on these bad boys
- USDA Organic & Non-GMO Project Verified
- 13g of Complete Plant Protein (Sprouted & Whole Grain)
- 3g of Fiber
- Gluten-Free Certified, Dairy-Free, Soy-Free
- Made with Coconut Nectar (same glycemic index as an apple)
- No Protein Isolates, Sugar Alcohols, or Added “Natural Flavors”
Annnnndddd they taste like freaking candy bars. It may sound weird, but I like dipping my Square Bars in hot tea. Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it! It makes the chocolate coating all melty and amazing. Again, whether or not you have allergies, you HAVE to try these bars! My favorite flavors are the Chocolate Coated Peanut Butter (ha, shocker) and the Chocolate Coated Mint.
Many times, people have told me “I feel so bad for you, you can’t eat ice cream!”. Ummm…not true. I’d feel bad for me too if that were the case! There are tons of dairy-free ice cream options out there, I promise. Some are delicious, others…ehh not so much (almond milk ice cream- kinda icy rather than creamy). Through trial and error, I’ve found my very favorite ice cream brand: Nada Moo. This brand makes coconut milk based ice cream. One thing about coconut is, it has a very distinct flavor and often times, coconut milk ice cream will have that flavor regardless of whether they’re supposed to be mint or chocolate hazelnut. BUT NOT NADA MOO! I was overzealous when I tried my first spoon of that mint chip and couldn’t detect the slightest hint of coconut, just pure minty goodness (plus the ratio of chocolate chips to ice cream was perfection). All of the flavors I’ve tried have been phenomenal and I can’t wait to try more! Check this brand out!
In terms of more meal foods, I eat a LOT of hummus. This stuff is great on literally everything. Carrot? Duh! A sandwich? Yum! Cake? Umm…okay, maybe not everything.
Anyway, that’s just a super quick overview, but if you also have any food intolerances/allergies here are a few more brands/products I recommend you check out. I’ve gone through the struggle of trying to find good alternatives and I hope I can save some of you time, money, and frustration.
I love that it’s carrageenan free and doesn’t have a ton of funky additives
“The whole food protein bar with no B.S.” The Chocolate Sea Salt and Chocolate Mint are my favorites- so fudgey!
Okay, dairy-free cheese does have a LONG way to go, but Kite Hill is 100% AMAZING! There are so many nasty dairy-free cheeses out there guys and I’ve tried, like, all of them. Save yourself a lot and just try Kite Hill, you won’t be sorry! It’s definitely the best one out there and isn’t filled with wacky ingredients. I love their ricotta and cream cheese spread.
Oh my gosh, their Chocolate Power O’s are out of this world! Not only do they turn your almond milk chocolate and taste like a dessert, but they also pack some protein since they’re made with beans.
Without a doubt, this brand carries the best veggie burgers! The edges are perfectly crisp and they offer a wide array of flavors. Plus their little veggie bites are also so adorable.
First of all, can we just clap it up for these sisters (who also had to change their diet due to health issues) who made these freezer waffles that pack (at least) 8 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, and tons of flavor per serving. Obviously, the chocolate chip is my favorite flavor, but they’re all delcious!
Gluten free pasta is a really controversial topic. This brand puts all doubts to rest with their Egg Tagliatelle. These egg noodles are a favorite of my (non gluten-free) parents too.
This brand carries grain-free crackers and bread mixes, but my main love is for their baking mixes. Their muffin/cupcake mixes are so delicious and nutritious to boot.
This brand carries a lot of flours and baking mixes, but I want to focus of their protein powders. I was lucky enough to get to try them and I have to say, I think the vanilla flavor may be the best protein powder I’ve ever tried. It’s so good thrown into smoothies to add a protein (and probiotic) boost. In general, finding protein powders without additives, chemicals, and artificial ingredients can be really tough, so this product is a winner for me.
This brand is another favorite natural, plant-based protein powder of mine. I love that the protein makes drinks that are so thick you can just use water and it still tastes like a milkshake.
At the end of the day, my dietary “restrictions” (I don’t like to think of them as “restrictions- too negative, rather “differences”, maybe?) really HAVE sparked a passion in me for nutrition, baking, and cooking. In a weird way, I’m actually kind of glad I’ve had to go through the experience. Just goes to show that it’s the challenges you face that shape you.
After all, when life hands you lemons…
Make an exfoliator?
Let me know…
What kombucha brands/flavors would you recommend?
What are some of your favorite food brands/products?
What difficulties do you believe have shaped you?
Enjoy the moment,
